The Challenge
Tristel are an infection prevention company, producing 10 product lines from their in-house manufacturing facility located in Snailwell, Cambridgeshire, England. Their products are used in a range of clinical settings from hospitals to front line refugee centres. Traceability is an important aspect of using their products, but this was primarily handled through paper-based solutions. Our challenge was to produce a product that went beyond replicating paper in a digital world, but leveraged the benefits of digital technology to add value.
The Solution
Handsfree interactions, value add through information delivered at the right time, and offline capability.
Through interviews with Tristel’s team we learned that their clients were often recording infection control events in areas with poor connectivity, whether that be a refugee camp in Turkey or a hospital in Manchester, but would want to access data from administrative offices in different buildings or even countries. In addition they would often lack access to hardware.
Our solution was to develop a native mobile application for recording infection control events and a web application for accessing the data. The app would be provided on a device with a housing, so that clients need not use their own hardware and we could reduce costs by optimising for one specific Android device for the MVP.
After creating low-fidelity prototypes we conducted usability testing in an ultrasound clinic to identify design issues at an early stage. One of the most interesting findings was that when using paper forms, the clinic staff had to wash their hands twice, once after completing device cleaning with Tristel products and again after recording the event. We also learned that with one specific Tristel product that required 3 specific steps to effectively use, there was an opportunity to reduce the risk of misuse.
Following feedback we added features to record infection control evens with both voice and gesture interfaces, thus eliminating the need for double washing of hands, and video training for how to use the products to mitigate the risk of misuse.
The Outcome
Tristel’s 3T product was launched in 2020. Hospitals and many other organisations across the world have adopted the cloud-based platform that offers an alternative to paper-based traceability systems. It offers an intuitive point-of-care mobile app and an interactive web portal, providing users with decontamination compliance tools which can be used in conjunction with the Tristel products. The tool has helped Tristel retain their existing clients by offering more value than competitors and secure new ones.
